Back at last with an interview with Scott Ferber, drummer of The Jauntee, about his new solo album, "Mine Yours & Ours" which comes out June 17. We also talk Jauntee album news and festival dates like their upcoming appearance at Peach Fest. I also (finally) recap my experience at the Three Lobed Recordings 21st Anniversary celebration. The recap includes some audio clips and we also get to hear some of the new material from Scott Ferber, some live Jauntee, and some good old Grateful Dead.

No Agenda, No Worries

 

Greetings, Dead Freaks!

This go-round, there's no guests, no theme and no worries. It's just you and me and some good old Grateful Dead. Actually, I do spend a few minutes talking about the latest Dave's Pick and Garcia Live releases because they're good and worth your attention. I also spin the first single from the upcoming Garcia Peoples album and as well as a Grateful Dead cover from songwriter, Glenn Thomas. Then we get into a bunch of Dead music ranging from 1973 to 1981 and featuing some serious hot rock & roll as well as deep jamming that will not disappoint.

The new Garcia Peoples album, "Nightcap At Wits' End" is due out in October and is available from Beyond Beyond is Beyond Records. It's more song oriented than their last album but suffers no lack of killer guitar riffs & solos. I cannot get enough of the thing so far. You can find it at https://garciapeoplesbbib.bandcamp.com. If you're a record collector like myself, they've just announced a second pressing of the very groovy splatter vinyl so jump on that before it's gone. Time will tell but I suspect that this is a strong candidate for many end-of-the-year lists.

There you can also order his new record, "Reassure Me There's A Window" which is a lovely collection of songs that is well worth your ears. Workingman's 50th (Side A)

In this episode, we kick off our two-part celebration of the 50th anniversary of the release of Workingman's Dead. To mark the moment, author Buzz Poole joins the show to break down the record just as he did in his recent book. Part of the Bloomsbury 33&⅓ series, Poole's book examines the whole history of The Grateful Dead through the lens of this one album. This being part one of our talk, we break down the songs on side one and wrap the episode with a mix of live versions of those tunes.

Double Drummer

Hey there, Dead Freaks! We've got an epic episode coming at you to help pass a bit of these weird wild times. Drummers, Ryan Jewell and Joe Westerlund join the show in separate chats to discuss their new albums, music that inspires them, and The Grateful Dead!

Hippy New Year

Greetings Dead Freaks!

Not too much fussing about this go-round as I'm late for a holiday something-or-other. So, after we talk about some exciting Osiris doings and a show that I recently attended, we get right down into the good old Grateful Dead.

This episode continues where we left off in episode 11 (two years ago!), surveying New Years Eve shows and runs. Because New Years is a party, we forego my usual fixation with weird and spacey in favor of rocking the night away.

034 - A Day Between

The year is rapidly closing but here's one more episode before 2019 hits. This one is a look at some of the shows played on 12/27 over the years. We've got Grateful Dead tunes from several eras of the band and some nice jams along with. So ice the bubbly, spike the last of the egg nog and get ready to boogie.

I will note, there's one song in the mix that I failed to back-announce. It was sort of a last-minute addition– a bonus track, if you will. Don't let that mix up get you down. I hope you enjoy all of this stuff and look froward to more great stuff to come in the new year.

We then get into his history as a Dead fan and wrap the whole thing up with some good old Grateful Dead.

018 - 50, 40, & 30 Years Ago

It's late April, the rains are here (on the East Coast, at least) the trees are blooming and the coldest days seem like they might be behind us. As such, I thought I might put together something to accompany the gradual warming, a little mix to go along with the first open-window days of the season. Plus, I did promise you kind and patient listeners a shot of good old Grateful Dead.

Wait no more.

This mix reaches back 50, 40, and 30 years to 1968, '78, and '88 for material. The tracks range from jams to cowboy songs and it hangs together despite the disparate eras represented. After the music, I do spend a few minutes detailing where the cuts come from so as to provide a little bit of context. So pull back the curtains, throw up the sash, crank the stereo and get on down.

Here we go with set two of our look at Bobby songs and his collaboration with the late John Perry Barlow. RJ Bee returns with more music and discussion to follow episode 15's great first set. Hopefully we can live up to that standard with this episode. 015 - Bobby Songs

We begin the Spring thaw with a visit from my good friend and the founder of both the Helping Friendly Podcast and the Osiris Podcast Network, RJ Bee. RJ wanted to talk about Bobby songs so that's just what we'll do. We also, spend a fair amount of time discussing the work of the late John Perry Barlow. Barlow's writing for the Grateful Dead along with his advocacy for an open internet via the Electronic Frontier Foundation are both keys to the very existence of this podcast. He will be missed and forever held in the utmost esteem.

002 - April '78

This month's episode focuses in on four shows in the Middle of April of 1978. Working their way out of the South, the Grateful Dead played Duke University on 4/12, VPI (now commonly referred to as Virginia Tech) on 4/14, William & Mary on 4/15, and Huntington Civic Center on 4/16. These four shows display a tidy cross-section of the band at the time and, fortunately for us, some quality tapes circulate.

The band is working into the layout of the modern Grateful Dead, with song oriented first sets and second set jamming but the jams aren't only in set two. In the episode, we talk a little about each show and then we've assembled a pair of 'sets' from highlights of the four nights.
