Workingman's 50th (Side A)

Greetings Dead Freaks!

In this episode, we kick off our two-part celebration of the 50th anniversary of the release of Workingman's Dead. To mark the moment, author Buzz Poole joins the show to break down the record just as he did in his recent book. Part of the Bloomsbury 33&⅓ series, Poole's book examines the whole history of The Grateful Dead through the lens of this one album. This being part one of our talk, we break down the songs on side one and wrap the episode with a mix of live versions of those tunes.

Check your local bookseller for Buzz's book, Grateful Dead's Workingman's Dead or head over to 333Sound.com for a list of retailers and to learn more about the series. (You can also cop it at Amazon, if you must.)

  1. Really enjoyed listening to you and Buzz examine side 1 of "Workingman's Dead". Hunter's lyrics are especially well-suited to being viewed from various angles, so it's very cool to gain an alternate perspective. I never thought of this album as particularly "topical" aside from "New Speedway Boogie" but you all revealed there's a thematic thread running through these tunes. I'll be picking up the 33 & 1/3 book and look forward to the side 2 episode. May I request some more studio album focused shows in the future? Also the jam out of that "UJB" pick was fantastic! Early 80's Dead (their "lost years" as far as I'm concerned) continues to surprise me with these little gems of improv.
