December 2022

Greetings Dead Freaks!

The last episode of 2022 is here with a variety of new (and old) music recommendations coming straight from my playlists to your earholes. Its definitely been a year over here at Shrunken Road Studios and I thank you for sticking with me through it all. In addition to the recommendations, I'm taking one last chance to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead's 1972 shows with a healthy mix that gets good and weird.

Please check out these fine releases as heard in the episode:

Phil Cook "From The Kitchen" is a terrific 2xLP live album available from Warhen Records. Cook and company create a charming blend of blues, soul, and gospel that touches the heart and lifts the spirit. I had the pleasure of talking to him for episode 21(!) and continue to love his work. Grip your copy today via the Warhen Record Bandcamp.

Sunburned Hand of the Man is a psychedelic/experimental music collective that has had many members, many forms, and many sounds over the years but they have consistently made great, weird, music for decades. The recent reissue of "Headdress" from Three Lobed Recordings throws back hard to the sound of the band 20 years ago but it could well have been recorded last week. Or next. Grip that here.
Or go to the Sunburned Bandcamp page and check out "Archive Dive" which contains the fuller excerpt of the excerpt played on the show as well as a few other live cuts which, you'll find, are not the same as what I presented. That's who these guys are; an ungoverned morass of sound and spirit. Ride along or get off the bus. Get Archive Dive or, even better, their entire digital discography for the cost of an album at subunrnedhandoftheman.bandcamp.com.

Spiral Joy Band is a long running group leaning here with their traditional instruments into the outer realms. Making spiritual, meditational, music with traditional instruments is not new but it's a zone they homesteaded upon for some time as their existence and personnel intertwine through the years with Pelt. This latest is called "In The River" and is a bit of an homage to Paul Metzger (get to know him!) whom they had just seen perform when this was put to tape. You can grip the LP via bandcamp SpiralJoyBand.Bandcamp.com or from the label, Feeding Tube Records.

Lastly but by no means least, Mike Gangloff  (Pelt, Black Twig Pickers, Eight Point Star) has released a beautiful solo album; his first for some time; entitled "Evening Measures". Released by VHF Records, "Evening Measures" cleaves closer to traditional than the selections above but still leans into drone capturing a unique work of beauty. This one is out now and has done many a turn on my turntable. Get yours from VHF Records.

Dave Heumann

Greetings Dead Freaks!

For this episode, I'm thrilled to welcome Dave Heumann to the show. Dave is the long-time leader of Baltimore's Arbouretum and has great new solo release entitled "Guitar Tapes Vol 1" out now (and coming soon on LP.) We discuss these projects and more including (obviously) Grateful Dead.

Cover Art for Dave Heumann's "Guitar Tapes Vol1" Shows a distorted view of high tension power lines surmounting a hill.

You can find "Guitar Tapes Vol 1" on Bandcamp via https://daveheumann.bandcamp.com/album/guitar-tapes-vol-1. It's an exploration of Heumann's current state of affairs guitar-wise and reveals a thoughtful and engaged hand and tone.

Arbouretum's latest album, "Let It All In" is also on Bandcamp at https://arbouretum.bandcamp.com/album/let-it-all-in. Go here for great songs written and sung by Dave Heumann and captured by a terrific incarnation of his long running band.

Eli Winter

Greetings Dead Freaks!

Eli Winter returns! Previously appearing in a short chat for ep 47, he's back for a full length interview and an amazing new self-titled album. Although it's just his name on the front of the record, this album finds Winter collaborating with a fabulous array of artists including Cameron Knowler, Yasmin Williams, David Grubbs, Ryley Walker, Tyler Damon, and the late jaimie branch.  I've included a track from the album and it's followed by a lengthy blast of Grateful Dead from Chicago's Kinetic Playground.

Winter's latest album is entitled, "Eli Winter" and has been released by the amazing Three Lobed Recordings. You can find it, along with an astounding collection of other music at https://threelobed.bandcamp.com.

Also mentioned on this episode are these very fine releases:

Elkhorn - Distances (Feeding Tube Records)

ragenap

Greetings, Dead Freaks!

We're back with a great conversation with guitarist and deep improv musiv head, Joel Berk. Berk releases deep guitar-based zones under the name ragenap. We talk about his work and its origins before diving into a bit of a discussion about Chicago's improv music scene and, of course Grateful Dead. in and around the interview, we sample some ragenap and one of his more recent releases leads of a deep mix of Dead jams and songs.

You can find Berk's music at the easy to recall link, ragenap.bandcamp.com. I strongly recommend the albums, Thankruptcy, No Ear To Hear (a split with Prana Crafter), and the most recent: Thriving Culture. You'll also find a wide array of "covers" tracks inspired by various songs, many of which may be familiar. I haven't found one that I didn't like but I will recommend a couple favorites: "shenandoah", "piper (intro)", and "days between".

The Brokedown Podcast is also part of Osiris Media. Osiris is creating a community that connects people like you with podcasts and live experiences about artists and topics you love. As I mentioned, I will be co-hosting an evening of conversation and music with Taper's Choice on Wednesday, August 31, in Denver, CO at the Larimer Lounge. William Tyler

Greetings Dead Freaks!

I am very pleased to have guitarist William Tyler on the show. We sat down and spoke a few weeks ago about som many things including, starting out in Nashville, his earliest band, joining Lambchop & The Silver Jews, his first solo ventures and some of his latest work. Naturally, we bring it around to Grateful Dead. After the chat, you'll hear a track from the latest release, "Lost Futures", a collaboration with Marisa Anderson. All that is followed by an excellent selection of Grateful Dead.

Marisa Anderson & William Tyler's "Lost Futures" is available, along with most of Tyler's releases, on his Bandcamp page, williamtyler.bandcamp.com, and wherever records are sold. I have all of these records and I sincerely believe that you should too.

The new LP release of PG Six & Louis Bock's "All Summer Long Is Gone" is available now from Feeding Tube Records via feedingtuberecords.com.

Lastly, my own new album, "Slips, Trips, & Falls" out now and available on most digital outlets that don't end in "tify". You can also buy it digitally or grip a physical copy from my bandcamp page, jmhart.bandcamp.com. Thanks.
