Eli Winter

Greetings Dead Freaks!

Eli Winter returns! Previously appearing in a short chat for ep 47, he's back for a full length interview and an amazing new self-titled album. Although it's just his name on the front of the record, this album finds Winter collaborating with a fabulous array of artists including Cameron Knowler, Yasmin Williams, David Grubbs, Ryley Walker, Tyler Damon, and the late jaimie branch.  I've included a track from the album and it's followed by a lengthy blast of Grateful Dead from Chicago's Kinetic Playground.

In this episode we welcome PG Six (aka  Pat Gubler) to the show to talk about his latest release, "PG Six / Louise Bock - All Summer Long Is Gone". But that's just a sliver of the ground we cover as he's not only an active member of Garcia Peoples and Wet Tuna, but there's more than twenty years of work to discuss! The conversation is augmented and followed by a few selections from his more recent work before I spin a nice slab of Grateful Dead.

"All Summer Long Is Gone" is a duo album billed as PG Six / Louise Bock and is available on cassette from Feeding Tube Records here. The solo, live, album PG Six "Live At the Tavern" is also available from Feeding Tube Records. It's on vinyl as was as a digital download via Bandcamp.

If you're looking for more Wet Tuna, the quickest path to enlightenment is via the Wet Tuna Bandcamp page. The "Eau To A Fake Bookie" physical release that we discuss is available there or go directly to it here. Looking for Garcia Peoples?  They have a bandcamp page too, which features the upcoming album, "Dodging Dues", which is out in early January 2022.

Greeting's Dead Freaks!

This week I talked with actor, producer, playwright, and Deadhead, Erik Jensen. Erik has co-written several plays with his wife Jessica Blank including "How To Be A Rock Critic" in which he portrayed famed critic Lester Bangs and this year's "Coal Country" which featured songs and on-stage performance from Steve Earle. We talk about Erik's history as a Deadhead, how their music helped him heal and guides him in his work today. Afterwards, we check out one of Earle's songs from "Coal Country" followed by a healthy dose of Grateful Dead.

As mentioned in the interview, you can find a film version of Jensen & Blank's play, "The Exonerated" on iTunes. This production stars Susan Sarandon, Danny Glover, and Brian Dennehy. You can also find Steve Earle's album of songs from "Coal Country" entitled, "Ghosts of West Virginia" on his bandcamp page. Both are highly recommended.

Chris Funk of The Decemberists

Darryl Norsen

Darryl is based in the Boston suburbs where he can often be found digging through dusty bins for inspiration. His artwork is heavily rooted in the rich and vibrant counterculture history where the lines are thick and the colors vibrate which has found him working with a variety of musicians and labels. His current client list includes: Folkways, Light in the Attic Records, Phish, Jerry Garcia Estate, Hiss Golden Messenger and Aquarium Drunkard where he also pens the excellent "Dead Notes" blog.

We talk about his background and his work and, inevitably, swing around to Grateful Dead and home in on a great run of prime 1969 shows.

Early December

Tom is currently in the group Live Dead '69 who are embarking on a short East Coast tour to mark the Days Between. In addition to T.C., the band features Mark Karan, Robin Sylvester, Slick Aguilar, and Michal Falzarano. They're billing it as Live Dead & Riders '69 this time as they'll be including a New Riders set at the beginning of each show! This looks to be a blast so have a look at the tour dates below. 012 - One-Off Venues: Set 1

Happy New Year! Here's hoping that your 2017 closed out well and 2018 is off to a good start. I know I'm hoping that we at the podcast, along with all of you, can take this one higher than the last.

With that in mind, we're kicking off 2018 with another visit from my good friend, Andy Barnes. Together we dug into a list of venues that the Grateful Dead only visited one time and we've assembled what I hope you'll find to be an entertaining listen.

We cover a fair big of ground in this set, from the 60's to the 80's, with some rock, blues, and jamming throughout. Once again, this will be a two-parter, continuing with Ep013 in two weeks. So spin this up and hunker down by the fire as we wait out the Winter together.

011 - Ghosts of New Years' Past

It's December and, on top of the various religious holidays ahead, we close out and usher in a new and hopefully better year. Once upon a time, in Grateful Dead land, the eve of the new year was celebrated with a festive concert appearance, perhaps even a run of concerts. Sometimes, spectacle would accompany the strike of midnight but really, the Grateful Dead is all the spectacle we Deadheads need.

This month we take a look at a few of those New Year's Eve performances and play some choice cuts to help you close out your year. We've got the Rock & Roll, Blues, and, my personal favorite genre, Face-Melting Jams.

So, polish off the egg nog and break into the bubbly, cos we're gonna party like it's 1969.

006 - Happy Birthday, Jerry

August marks Jerry Garcia's 75th birthday and so, we're celebrating.

This month we've put together to mixed sets of music spanning the 60's, 70's, and the 80's. Tracks run from acoustic to very electric and all points in between. So open up the windows and crank the speakers. Light a candle and crack a smile because Jerry's Birthday is a time to celebrate, not mourn.

We hope you enjoy this little sampler of the treasures Jerry and the Grateful Dead gave to us over the years.

005 - Grateful Americana

This month on the Brokedown Podcast we take a look at the Grateful Dead's lyrical Americana. More an overview than a deep-dive, we're going to cover a fair bit of ground like a freight with a good signal and a head of steam. We're covering all four decades of Grateful Dead this time.

It's no question that the Grateful Dead are, musically, a potent amalgam of American musical styles. Bluegrass, jazz, rock, R&B, folk, country, and avant garde composition mesh into a tantalizing stew. Lyrically, the band tells stories that cover the gamut of American walks of life and even paint a romantic mythology blending old west, deep south, appalachian, and maritime themes with modern road songs.

This, along with some jamming, is what we set out to explore over these two sets of great live music. Naturally you'll get some discussion before and after each. The playlist will be posted after the jump to protect you from spoilers. So fire this up along with the backyard barbecue and have yourself a real good time.
