Remembering Phil Lesh

With a blend of sadness for loss and joy for the music and memories that we will always cherish, we pay tribute to Phil Lesh. A number of friends sent in their own remembrances and musings on the man and what he meant to them. I have included them along with a substantial dose of music for an epic episode, befitting this beast of a bass player and singular musician.

Dave Harrington (Darkside, Taper's Choice) joins me to talk about his latest solo album, "Skull Dream" out now on his new label, Maximum Overdub. We take the time to catch up on a few projects he's worked on since we last spoke, including Taper's Choice and, very recently, playing Garcia's Alligator guitar onstage. I cut off a couple slices of his music and then wrap things up with a nice slab of Good Old Grateful Dead.

Andy Logan, founder of the Grateful Guitars Foundation and steward of Jerry Garcia's Alligator guitar joins me to discuss the mission of the foundation, the magic within these special instruments, a new benefit album, and the upcoming show to support the foundation. 

The new album, which benefits Grateful Guitars, is called "Grateful: The Music Plays The Band" and features Oteil Burbridge, Dave Nelson Band, Dark Star Orchestra, Afro Dead and more. It's out now and can be found in physical and streaming outlets via this link.

The benefit concert is on August 13 at the Great American Music Hall (an auspicious date to be in that room) and features Melvin Seals, John Kadlecik, Pete Sears, Barry Sless, Dave Hidalgo and a bunch of other great players. I didn't mention that the joint release is a tribute to the founder of SOB, Kevin McFadin who passed last year. I had some interactions with McFadin myself and enjoyed a number of SOB releases. He will certainly be missed.

Greetings Dead Freaks!

The last episode of 2022 is here with a variety of new (and old) music recommendations coming straight from my playlists to your earholes. Its definitely been a year over here at Shrunken Road Studios and I thank you for sticking with me through it all. In addition to the recommendations, I'm taking one last chance to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead's 1972 shows with a healthy mix that gets good and weird.

Phil Cook "From The Kitchen" is a terrific 2xLP live album available from Warhen Records. Cook and company create a charming blend of blues, soul, and gospel that touches the heart and lifts the spirit. I had the pleasure of talking to him for episode 21(!) and continue to love his work. Sunburned Hand of the Man is a psychedelic/experimental music collective that has had many members, many forms, and many sounds over the years but they have consistently made great, weird, music for decades. The recent reissue of "Headdress" from Three Lobed Recordings throws back hard to the sound of the band 20 years ago but it could well have been recorded last week. Or next. Grip that here.

Or go to the Sunburned Bandcamp page and check out "Archive Dive" which contains the fuller excerpt of the excerpt played on the show as well as a few other live cuts which, you'll find, are not the same as what I presented. That's who these guys are; an ungoverned morass of sound and spirit. Ride along or get off the bus. Spiral Joy Band is a long running group leaning here with their traditional instruments into the outer realms. Making spiritual, meditational, music with traditional instruments is not new but it's a zone they homesteaded upon for some time as their existence and personnel intertwine through the years with Pelt. This latest is called "In The River" and is a bit of an homage to Paul Metzger (get to know him!) whom they had just seen perform when this was put to tape. Lastly but by no means least, Mike Gangloff  (Pelt, Black Twig Pickers, Eight Point Star) has released a beautiful solo album; his first for some time; entitled "Evening Measures". Released by VHF Records, "Evening Measures" cleaves closer to traditional than the selections above but still leans into drone capturing a unique work of beauty. This one is out now and has done many a turn on my turntable. Get yours from VHF Records.

Greetings, Dead Freaks!

We're back with a great conversation with guitarist and deep improv musiv head, Joel Berk. Berk releases deep guitar-based zones under the name ragenap. We talk about his work and its origins before diving into a bit of a discussion about Chicago's improv music scene and, of course Grateful Dead. in and around the interview, we sample some ragenap and one of his more recent releases leads of a deep mix of Dead jams and songs.

You can find Berk's music at the easy to recall link, ragenap.bandcamp.com. I strongly recommend the albums, Thankruptcy, No Ear To Hear (a split with Prana Crafter), and the most recent: Thriving Culture. You'll also find a wide array of "covers" tracks inspired by various songs, many of which may be familiar. I haven't found one that I didn't like but I will recommend a couple favorites: "shenandoah", "piper (intro)", and "days between".

Brad Farberman of Middle Blue

For this new episode,  I chat with guitarist, Brad Farberman. Brad plays with Middle Blue, Big Feet, and more. He's also producing a monthly compilation called "Stay In Shape" to benefit music venues that have been shut down due to coronavirus. Brad's music resides somewhere near the intersection of jazz, funk, and jam and, to compliment this, I've selected some live Jerry Garcia performances from similar zones.

Hippy New Year

Not too much fussing about this go-round as I'm late for a holiday something-or-other. So, after we talk about some exciting Osiris doings and a show that I recently attended, we get right down into the good old Grateful Dead.

This episode continues where we left off in episode 11 (two years ago!), surveying New Years Eve shows and runs. Because New Years is a party, we forego my usual fixation with weird and spacey in favor of rocking the night away.

Little Wings

Greetings Dead Freaks! In this episode we get to know Little Wings' Kyle Field who has been making wonderful music under that name for many years. We take things all the way back and talk about when Kyle first became aware of music and rhythm, about being a solo artist with a band name, looking back at one's older material, surfing, and so much more.

Robert Hunter

Greetings, friends.
This episode is a bit sadder of purpose but, nonetheless, a celebration. Robert Hunter has passed on and we celebrate him with some memories, music, and poetry. His lyrics fueled the mythology of the Grateful Dead and Deadheads for more than fifty years and, as we carry on, his words will ride with us forever.

Friends from fellow Osiris podcasts join in to share some thoughts. We have Rob Turner of Inside Out with Turner & Seth, Aaron & Apple from No Simple Road, and Casey Rae of Dead To Me. Each offer personal thoughts on the legacy of Robert Hunter. I'd like to thank them all, once again, for their contributions.

Listeners and Dead Freaks, this episode features a terrific chat with WFMU host, Deadhead, and encyclopedia on far-out music of all kinds, Jeff Conklin. Jeff's show on WFMU is The Avant Ghetto and there he spins all manner of psychedelic and experimental tunes including some terrific selections by our beloved Grateful Dead. We talk about his development as a Deadhead and then dug into studying the vast riches resulting from the Dead's many visits to the great state of Oregon.

011 - Ghosts of New Years' Past

It's December and, on top of the various religious holidays ahead, we close out and usher in a new and hopefully better year. Once upon a time, in Grateful Dead land, the eve of the new year was celebrated with a festive concert appearance, perhaps even a run of concerts. Sometimes, spectacle would accompany the strike of midnight but really, the Grateful Dead is all the spectacle we Deadheads need.

This month we take a look at a few of those New Year's Eve performances and play some choice cuts to help you close out your year. We've got the Rock & Roll, Blues, and, my personal favorite genre, Face-Melting Jams.

So, polish off the egg nog and break into the bubbly, cos we're gonna party like it's 1969.

The kids are back to school and we're making a study of one of the finest months in Grateful Dead history: September 1972. This time around we also have our first ever guest, Andy, bringing his knowledge and enthusiasm to the show.
