I am very pleased to have guitarist William Tyler on the show. We sat down and spoke a few weeks ago about som many things including, starting out in Nashville, his earliest band, joining Lambchop & The Silver Jews, his first solo ventures and some of his latest work. Workingman's 50th (Side 2)

On June 14th we marked the official 50th anniversary of the release of the Grateful Dead's fifth album, Workingman's Dead. In this episode, author Buzz Poole and I continue to break down the record just has he did in his terrific book. Part of the Bloomsbury 33&⅓ series, Poole's book examines the whole history of The Grateful Dead through the lens of this one album. We flip the album over and explore side two before spinning a mix of live performances of the songs.

Hippy New Year

Greetings Dead Freaks!

Not too much fussing about this go-round as I'm late for a holiday something-or-other. So, after we talk about some exciting Osiris doings and a show that I recently attended, we get right down into the good old Grateful Dead.

This episode continues where we left off in episode 11 (two years ago!), surveying New Years Eve shows and runs. Because New Years is a party, we forego my usual fixation with weird and spacey in favor of rocking the night away.

Robert Hunter

Greetings, friends.
This episode is a bit sadder of purpose but, nonetheless, a celebration. Robert Hunter has passed on and we celebrate him with some memories, music, and poetry. His lyrics fueled the mythology of the Grateful Dead and Deadheads for more than fifty years and, as we carry on, his words will ride with us forever.

Friends from fellow Osiris podcasts join in to share some thoughts. We have Rob Turner of Inside Out with Turner & Seth, Aaron & Apple from No Simple Road, and Casey Rae of Dead To Me. Each offer personal thoughts on the legacy of Robert Hunter. I'd like to thank them all, once again, for their contributions.

Visionary Americana

Greetings, Dead Freaks! Better late than never and we're back with an oversized episode for your Summer listening. 034 - A Day Between

The year is rapidly closing but here's one more episode before 2019 hits. This one is a look at some of the shows played on 12/27 over the years. We've got Grateful Dead tunes from several eras of the band and some nice jams along with. So ice the bubbly, spike the last of the egg nog and get ready to boogie.

I will note, there's one song in the mix that I failed to back-announce. It was sort of a last-minute addition– a bonus track, if you will. Don't let that mix up get you down. I hope you enjoy all of this stuff and look froward to more great stuff to come in the new year.

005 - Grateful Americana

This month on the Brokedown Podcast we take a look at the Grateful Dead's lyrical Americana. More an overview than a deep-dive, we're going to cover a fair bit of ground like a freight with a good signal and a head of steam. We're covering all four decades of Grateful Dead this time.

It's no question that the Grateful Dead are, musically, a potent amalgam of American musical styles. Bluegrass, jazz, rock, R&B, folk, country, and avant garde composition mesh into a tantalizing stew. Lyrically, the band tells stories that cover the gamut of American walks of life and even paint a romantic mythology blending old west, deep south, appalachian, and maritime themes with modern road songs.

This, along with some jamming, is what we set out to explore over these two sets of great live music. Naturally you'll get some discussion before and after each. The playlist will be posted after the jump to protect you from spoilers. So fire this up along with the backyard barbecue and have yourself a real good time.

003 - Spring '77

It's May, which is still Spring and a perfect time to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the laudable Spring '77 tour. The band has marked the occasion with the release of a new boxed set featuring the complete 5/5 (New Haven, CT), 5/7 (Boston, MA) , 5/8 (Ithaca, NY), and 5/9 (Buffalo, NY) shows. Additionally, the legendary 5/8 show from Cornell University has received its own standalone release on compact disc and vinyl. (You can grab these here: boxed set and here: 5/8 CD, Vinyl)

On this episode, we join in the party with a mix of tunes from the tour as well as a tribute to the 5/8 show itself. Whether it's your favorite Grateful Dead show or one that you feel gets a little too much love, we hope you enjoy what we've got in store for you here.
