On this episode, Bubba Ayoub joins to take us on a journey through Space. Bubba operates the @OTDISpace twitter account, makes synthesizer music, and runs light shows with video synthesis & manipulation and can be found on instagram as @juggableoffense. So buckle up as we launch into the outer limits and shine a light on the weirdest corners of Grateful Dead.

I'm keeping it simple this week, as we slide into March, with a look back 40 years to the last few days of February, 1981. Chicago's Uptown Theater hosted it's final run of Grateful Dead shows on 2/26-28/1981 and great things went down each night. I get into some of the highlights and then let the tunes do the talking with an extended mix of music from the run. Here's hoping the tunes keep you warm.

No Agenda, No Worries

 

Greetings, Dead Freaks!

This go-round, there's no guests, no theme and no worries. It's just you and me and some good old Grateful Dead. Actually, I do spend a few minutes talking about the latest Dave's Pick and Garcia Live releases because they're good and worth your attention. I also spin the first single from the upcoming Garcia Peoples album and as well as a Grateful Dead cover from songwriter, Glenn Thomas. Then we get into a bunch of Dead music ranging from 1973 to 1981 and featuing some serious hot rock & roll as well as deep jamming that will not disappoint.

The new Garcia Peoples album, "Nightcap At Wits' End" is due out in October and is available from Beyond Beyond is Beyond Records. It's more song oriented than their last album but suffers no lack of killer guitar riffs & solos. I cannot get enough of the thing so far. You can find it at https://garciapeoplesbbib.bandcamp.com. If you're a record collector like myself, they've just announced a second pressing of the very groovy splatter vinyl so jump on that before it's gone. Time will tell but I suspect that this is a strong candidate for many end-of-the-year lists.

There you can also order his new record, "Reassure Me There's A Window" which is a lovely collection of songs that is well worth your ears. Celebrating Brent Mydland with Justin Bruce

Greetings Dead Freaks!

For episode 73, I am joined by Justin Bruce, music fan and weatherman for Las Vegas' KTNV. Justin recently decided to explore the Brent Mydland years of Grateful Dead so I asked him to come on and help me celebrate the late keyboardist as we approach the 30th anniversary of his final shows and passing. We discuss Brent's tenure, his songwriting, and musical contributions. Afterwards, I have assembled a hefty mix that incorporates his songs and some excellent jamming. I hope you dig it.

I am tempted to apologize for the length of the mix in this episode but, honestly, it could and possibly should have been longer. Greetings, Dead Freaks! This week we go deep with guitar player, Chris Forsyth. We talk about his career up to now, his studies with Television's Richard Lloyd, and Chris' new album on No Quarter Records, All Time Present (available from noquarter.net and bandcamp.)  Along the way, we dip into the album for a couple of clips and then spin a full cut after the chat before we get into some Garcia and Grateful Dead jams.

As for the Grateful Dead music in this episode, the show was released as Dave's Pick's 20 but, we're listening to a fine Jim Wise audience recording. This is in the spirit of the discussion in Ep 020 wherein guest Jeff Conklin speaks to the distinct energies detectable in audience tapes that don't come through in most soundboards. So yeah, you may have heard this stuff before but, have you heard it like this? Time to find out.

006 - Happy Birthday, Jerry

August marks Jerry Garcia's 75th birthday and so, we're celebrating.

This month we've put together to mixed sets of music spanning the 60's, 70's, and the 80's. Tracks run from acoustic to very electric and all points in between. So open up the windows and crank the speakers. Light a candle and crack a smile because Jerry's Birthday is a time to celebrate, not mourn.
