Greetings Dead Freaks!

In this episode I chat with guitarist, Jeremy Kizina, about his return to guitar and his recent release "Our Ghosts Follow". We dig into his background as a touring musician, his wide-ranging influences, and, of course, the Grateful Dead. I sneak in a couple of new music recommendations at the top of the show and there's a terrific mix of Dead in the back half.

The excellent new podcast "The Female Bob Dylan" is a few promising episodes in and I highly recommend it. Writer, researcher & producer Sophie Abramowitz, artist & musician Sarah Bachman, and folklorist, writer & (terrific record label) SPINSTER co-owner Emily Hilliard explore singer-songwriters who have been shouldered with this title. Please do check out there show wherever you find your favorite podcasts.

I mentioned a few of the many recent releases from The Modern Folk in the intro this episode. "Serf Punk", a singer-songwriter-ish album that I love, was first. Click here to check it out. "Primitive Future III" follows and that one, quite different to "Serf Punk", is largely instrumental. Proceeds from that release are being routed into Hurricane Helene relief and you can find it here. And the last one, which is also the newest one, "Crater Family" from The Modern Folk Trio Band can be picked up on vinyl here.

Buck Curran

 Greetings Dead Freaks! In this episode I chat with Buck Curran, a terrific musician known for his work as one half of Arborea as well as his more recent, excellent, solo work. His third solo album, No Love Is Sorrow, is a lovely release that came out as the pandemic took hold. Buck spoke to me from his home in Bergamo, Italy where he has weathered the pandemic and things are just now starting to reopen. In addition to his music and the madness of the past year we talked about his early influences, English Folk, and even some of our shared stomping grounds from many years ago. After the chat, there's a healthy dose of Grateful Dead waiting for you.

Greetings Dead Freaks!
It's late December and the year is almost gone. I don't think many of us are going to miss 2020 but let's look instead to celebrate the season and remember a Christmas past. It's just you, me, and the Grateful Dead this time with a little something else thrown in for fun, so stoke up the fire, turn on the outside lights, and let's get this holiday party going on.

Workingman's 50th (Side 2)

On June 14th we marked the official 50th anniversary of the release of the Grateful Dead's fifth album, Workingman's Dead. In this episode, author Buzz Poole and I continue to break down the record just has he did in his terrific book. Part of the Bloomsbury 33&⅓ series, Poole's book examines the whole history of The Grateful Dead through the lens of this one album. We flip the album over and explore side two before spinning a mix of live performances of the songs.

Double Drummer

Hippy New Year

Greetings Dead Freaks!

Not too much fussing about this go-round as I'm late for a holiday something-or-other. So, after we talk about some exciting Osiris doings and a show that I recently attended, we get right down into the good old Grateful Dead.

This episode continues where we left off in episode 11 (two years ago!), surveying New Years Eve shows and runs. Because New Years is a party, we forego my usual fixation with weird and spacey in favor of rocking the night away.

011 - Ghosts of New Years' Past

It's December and, on top of the various religious holidays ahead, we close out and usher in a new and hopefully better year. Once upon a time, in Grateful Dead land, the eve of the new year was celebrated with a festive concert appearance, perhaps even a run of concerts. Sometimes, spectacle would accompany the strike of midnight but really, the Grateful Dead is all the spectacle we Deadheads need.

This month we take a look at a few of those New Year's Eve performances and play some choice cuts to help you close out your year. We've got the Rock & Roll, Blues, and, my personal favorite genre, Face-Melting Jams.

So, polish off the egg nog and break into the bubbly, cos we're gonna party like it's 1969.

006 - Happy Birthday, Jerry

August marks Jerry Garcia's 75th birthday and so, we're celebrating.

This month we've put together to mixed sets of music spanning the 60's, 70's, and the 80's. Tracks run from acoustic to very electric and all points in between. So open up the windows and crank the speakers. Light a candle and crack a smile because Jerry's Birthday is a time to celebrate, not mourn.
