BrokedownPod returns with new music, a great guest, and some good old Grateful Dead. Andy Logan, founder of the Grateful Guitars Foundation and steward of Jerry Garcia's Alligator guitar joins me to discuss the mission of the foundation, the magic within these special instruments, a new benefit album, and the upcoming show to support the foundation. 

The new album, which benefits Grateful Guitars, is called "Grateful: The Music Plays The Band" and features Oteil Burbridge, Dave Nelson Band, Dark Star Orchestra, Afro Dead and more. It's out now and can be found in physical and streaming outlets via this link.

The benefit concert is on August 13 at the Great American Music Hall (an auspicious date to be in that room) and features Melvin Seals, John Kadlecik, Pete Sears, Barry Sless, Dave Hidalgo and a bunch of other great players. Also in this episode, I spoke about a few new albums that I'm enjoying. 

From Elkhorn, I raved about the fuzzed out explorations on their album "Other Worlds", out now from Sunrise Ocean Bender/Feeding Tube/Cardinal Fuzz/Deep Water Acres. I didn't mention that the joint release is a tribute to the founder of SOB, Kevin McFadin who passed last year. I had some interactions with McFadin myself and enjoyed a number of SOB releases. He will certainly be missed.

Celebrating Brent Mydland with Justin Bruce

For episode 73, I am joined by Justin Bruce, music fan and weatherman for Las Vegas' KTNV. Justin recently decided to explore the Brent Mydland years of Grateful Dead so I asked him to come on and help me celebrate the late keyboardist as we approach the 30th anniversary of his final shows and passing. We discuss Brent's tenure, his songwriting, and musical contributions. Afterwards, I have assembled a hefty mix that incorporates his songs and some excellent jamming. I hope you dig it.

I am tempted to apologize for the length of the mix in this episode but, honestly, it could and possibly should have been longer. Jim Nunally

Greetings Dead Freaks!

It's midsummer and I've got a new episode to cool you down. Guitarist Jim Nunally chats with me about coming up as a flatpicker in the Bay Area, making the jump to music full time, playing music with David Grisman, the latest album from the Nell Robinson & Jim Nunally band, and so much more. There's also a mix of Grateful Dead tunes to wrap the whole thing up so stick around for the whole thing as you won't want to miss a bit.

You can find the last album, Western Sun, from the Nell and Jim Band on their website, NellandJim.com. It's a delightful fusion of the traditional sounds of bluegrass, folk, country, and swing with an infusion of smart songwriting. Their voices blend beautifully and the band has chops to spare. After the interview, I spin a terrific cut from the album.

I hope you enjoy this episode. I put some thought into the mix and it starts weird, but pulls up into some fairly coherent space.

018 - 50, 40, & 30 Years Ago

It's late April, the rains are here (on the East Coast, at least) the trees are blooming and the coldest days seem like they might be behind us. As such, I thought I might put together something to accompany the gradual warming, a little mix to go along with the first open-window days of the season. Plus, I did promise you kind and patient listeners a shot of good old Grateful Dead.

Wait no more.

This mix reaches back 50, 40, and 30 years to 1968, '78, and '88 for material. The tracks range from jams to cowboy songs and it hangs together despite the disparate eras represented. After the music, I do spend a few minutes detailing where the cuts come from so as to provide a little bit of context. So pull back the curtains, throw up the sash, crank the stereo and get on down.

We'll be back in May with a guest some more Grateful Dead.
